-,

SEDIMENTATION IN JOHN ~lARTIN RESERVOIR
ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN, COLORADO
RESU~VEY 01' MARCil 1972

C)

N
ex>
~
CJl

INTRODUCTION

1. Authorization. Preparation of this report on sedimentation in

John Martin Reservoi r on the Arkansas River in Colorado was authorized

by the District Engineer, Albuquerque District, Corps of Engineers,

Albuquerque, NelV ~lexico, in accordance with HI 1110-2-4000, dated

15 November 1961.

2. General. This is the fifth report presenting the results of

sediment investigations in John Martin Reservoir and for the Arkansas

River subbasin above Great Bend, Kansas. It was prepared following the

resurvey of sedimentation ranges in John Martin Reservoir and the degrada-

tion-ranges on the Arkansas River below the dam during ~larch 1972. Topog-

raphy of the area of the reservoir under water was detennined to elevation

3,800 feet- by use of sonic sounding equipment. Twenty-eight sounding lines

were run in the latter part of ~larch 1972 and a topographic map was drawn

from these data. This is the ninth resurvey of the reservoir ranges and

the seventh resurvey of the river ranges since the original surveys. The

last six resurveys have been made on an average of about once every 4-1/2

years. Reports on sedimentation in John Martin Reservoir were published

in September 1953, JWle 1960, June 1965, and October 1967. These reports

are complete and contain all pertinent factual data and results of studies

conducted prior to those dates. This fifth report includes data and

results of investigations since the 1966 resurvey (fourth report) and a
