"

2,8;3 &:

STATE OF COLORADO
Executive Chambers
Denver

February 27, 1976

NEWS RELEASE

Governor Lamm announced today that he is supporting the
decision of the Central Colorado and Lower South Platte Water Conser~
vancy Districts to contract for the immediate construction of the
Narrows Dam and Reservoir on the South Platte River, a few miles
upstream from the city of Fort Morgan. These two districts, repre-
senting most of the people of the South Platte River Valley between
Brighton and the Nebraska state line, are the sponsoring and contrac-
tual agencies for the Narrows Project.
The project was authorized by the Congress in 1970 and funds
have been appropriated for its construction for the past three years.
Actual construction has been delayed pending the preparati~n and filing
of an environmental impact statement. The project is being opposed
by a group of residents from the Weldon Valley area operating under the
title of "Regional Landowners Group."
A draft environmental impact statement for the project was
completed last December. Until this time, the state of Colorado has
made no official comment on the environmental impact statement. How-
ever, Governor Lamm stated today that he was approving the statement
and urging the immediate construction of the Narrows Project. In
announcing his decision, the Governor stated:
"The Narrows Project has been studied and restudied now for
a period of over thirty years. It has been twice authorized by the
United States Congress and funds are available for its construction.
