,

The power line that is being relocated around Ridgway Reservoir is being

constructed with a "raptor-proof" design to reduce the possibility of

.electrocution of large raptors. Lands along Cow Creek included in the project

right-of-way and lands acquired for wildlife mitigation may benefit the eagles

directly as hunting or roosting areas or indirectly as areas that produce

or support prey species.

The project 'should have no adverse effects on bald eagle populations in

the area.

;1

b. American Peregrine Falcon

The peregrine falcon is an endangered species and survives in Colorado

rl
','

in very low numbers. Isolated nesting pairs are reported from several

areas of western Colorado. The nearest active nest is outside of the project

area of influence. There is no critical habitat in the area.

;1

As indicated in the Dallas Creek Final Environmental Statement (Bureau

of Reclamation, 1976), an adult male peregrine was observed in early May,

1975 along the Uncompahgre River, near Ridgway. There are no known active

nests in the project area, and the sighting could represent a migrating

;;

individual.

?

According to the Dallas Creek Final Environmental Statement (1976) poten-

~
~1
'~

tial hunting areas will be inundated at Ridgway Reservoir, but the loss

of this hunting area is not expected to have a significant effect on the

falcon. The reservoir and shoreline created will provide habitat for

r~

peregrine falcon prey such as waterfowl and shore birds.

The project should not adversely affect any future reintroduction or

natural increases of the peregrine. Potential nesting areas will not be

I
\
w I
