.

relate flood frequency to water surface elevation. The status of

FIA studies is discussed for each hydrologic subarea of the South

Platte River basin in Appendix D, Flood Hazards, under "Previous

and Current Studies".

U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation. The

Bureau of Reclamation has planned a number of irrigation and hydro-

electric power projects in the South Platte River basin. These have

been discussed in detail in Appendix D, Flood Hazards. These proj-

ects provide for multipurpose storage which often includes flood

control storage.

U. S. GeOlogic Survey (USGS). The USGS provides preliminary
flood plain mapping usually outlined on USGS Quadrangle sheets.
This information is usually compiled from flood high water marks
and aerial photographs taken during floods.

Office of Emer~ency Preparedness. The Office of Emergency

Preparedness funds emergency flood control projects which are neces-

sary to restore designated flood damaged areas in the aftermath of

damaging floods.

STATE AGENCIES

Colorado Land Use Commission. The Colorado Land Use Commis-

sion (CLUC) has established an interest in flood plain management

and flood control needs of a number of geographically delineated

areas. Permits will be required for developments in flood plains

where floods occur with an average frequency of one or more times

in each 100 years and the potential for loss of life or significant

economic loss exists. It is the intention of the Commission to

maintain consistency with Federal programs. Accordingly, such

.

43
