.

the water quality in Chatfield Lake. Water supply vill be an impor-
tant factor in the development of this watershed. Without water,
development will be minimal. Recognition of this fact illustrates
the importance of close coordination vith PRCOG. It is important
that the Corps' planning effort dovetail in vith the PRCOG 208
Study in order to produce a unified, effective, and implementable
regional plan.

TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS IN THE SOUTH PLATTE
The total dissolved solids (TPS) problem is an important eco-
nomic question for the plains region of the South Platte basin from
Denver north to the State line. The increasing concentration of
TDS in both ground vater and surface water as flows more through
the basin, coupled vith the general increase in concentrations over
time, poses a serious problem for the basin. Continued increases
in TDS mean subsequent reductions in crop yields and economic activ-
ity for the plains area.

This study element would identify the problem as it exists

today, isolate the causes, evaluate any public health hazards,

evaluate existing and potential crop yield reductions, evaluate

other economic and social factors, examine solution techniques, and

vill develop feasible alternatives.

The most difficult task in this study element would be the

collection, organization, and interpretation of data. It would be

necessary to identify those areas where the TDS increases occur,

why they occur, and where the increase might cause crop yield reduc-

tions. This element would make extensive use of vater distribution,

use, and efficiencies of irrigation systems and techniques for both

ground vater and surface vater. Much of this information would be

34

.

.
