.

previously was uneconomical to mine. These activities and the

potential for continued or increased mining activity will be exam-

ined. Their effect on both short and long term water quality will

be examined. The techniques and their costs for preventing further

water quality degradation from mining activities will be reviewed.

This element does not entail any monitoring activities but will use

existing data and reports.

The development potential of the 3 counties would be examined

in an effort to determine the future effect of this development on

water quality. In Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties, the development

potential is limited by physical considerations such as the topo-

graphic and water supply constraints. The northern half of Douglas

County, however, is already experiencing ra~id growth. This is due

in part to the location of Interstate Highway 25 which provides

excellent vehicle access to the heart of Denver. Coordination and

regulation of this growth is necessary to assure the success of

measures recommended in DRCOG's 208 Study. The location and exten-

sion of interceptor sewers, water mains, treatment facilities, and

the development of the transportation network will have direct ef-

fects on vater quality in the area.

Also located in Douglas County is Chatfield Lake which is

nearing completion. Plum Creek flows into the lake from the south-

east and is one of the main tributaries. Highway 85 parallels Plum

Creek as it passes through the towns of Castle Rock, Sedalia, an1

Louviers. This has encouraged development along Plum Creek. Resi-

dential development, commercial establishments, and industrial

facilities will be discharging to Plum Creek. Water quality plan-

ning for this area must take place at an early stage in the devel-

opment of the Plum Creek watershed to prevent any degradation of

.

33
