It would also <br />be coordinated witl1. tl1.e Truckee River chapnel in:\Provements proposed by <br />tl1.e COIllS of Engineers and autl1.orized in the Flood Control Act of is/54 <br />witl1. tl1.e provision tl1.at the authorization would not become effective <br />unless and until the Washoe reclamation project had been authorized. <br />Copies of tl1.e report of September i954 were transmitted to the States <br />of Nevada. and California and to the Secre.tary of the Amy as req.Uired by <br />law. Copies were also transmitted to otl1.er interested Federal agencies. <br />Comments received from the various State and FederaJ. agencies were favor- <br />able. Bills to authorize construction of the Washoe project were intro- <br />duced in botl1. Houses of Congress and subcommittee hearings were held. The <br />project was autl1.orized under Public Law 858 which was approved by tl1.e <br />President August 1, 1956. <br />The authorizing act for tl1.e Washoe project inCluded a number of amend- <br />ments that grew out of congressional hearings and were not a part of tl1.e <br />Bureau of Reclamation's Feasibility Report of September 1954. An addi- <br />tional nonreimbursable expenditure of $2,000,000 was authorized for the <br />construction of facilities for the development of fish and wildlife <br />resources including facilities required to increase minimum water releases <br />from Lake Tahoe and to restore the Pyramid Lake fishery. These facilities <br />will include a reservoir on ProssEir Creek to provide for the increased <br />Lake Tahoe releases through an exchange of water and a fish hatchery just <br />below Watasheamu Dam on the Carson River to help restore the Pyramid Lake <br />fishery. This hatchery will be used p:rimarily to stock the lake and its <br />tributaries. <br /> <br />4 <br />
