Nambe Falls Reservoir
Nambe Falls began 1999 with the reservoir at elevation 6820,33 ft providing a storage
volume of 1678 AF, During the winter, releases averaged about 1,1 ft3/S, to maximize
conservation storage as agreed to by the Pojoaque Valley Irrigation District (PVID) and
Indian water users, The reservoir filled and spilled three times in 1999. The first spill
started on February 28 through March 1, the spill ended when releases for irrigation
started on March 1 and drew the water surface elevation down in the reservoir. The
second spill began on May 22 and ended on July 5, and corresponded with inflow
from spring runoff filling the reservoir, The third spill started on August 5 and ended
on September 7, Maximum releases of 72 ft3/s occurred from July 7 through July 8,
After the last spill ended on September 7, the reservoir then continued to decline for
the remainder of the year reaching its lowest point of the year on October 25 at an
elevation of 6,816.91 ft (1,510 AF),

As a result of the reservoir's cyclical operation, a higher than normal depletion of
1,111 AF was computed at Otowi. Cyclical operations of Nambe Falls Reservoir
consist of non-irrigation season operations and irrigation season operations, During
non-irrigation season (November through April), all inflow in excess of the bypass
requirement of 0,5 ft3/s is stored until an elevation of 6825,60 ft is reached, Once an
elevation of 6825,60 ft is attained, the outlet gates are regulated weekly to stabilize
the reservoir at 6825,60 ft, or an elevation determined by 100 percent ice cover. An
uncontrolled spill begins at elevation 6826,6ft, which is the top of the spillway crest,
During irrigation season (May through October), waterii.s stored and released on
demand to meet downstream requirements, This depletion (1,1.11 AF). exeeeded the
1,030 AF PVID Heron allocation set aside to offset Nambe Falls storage, Although.
the 1,030 AF is a "soft number," a depletion close to this amount is typically
computed at Otowi during an average year" San Juan-Chama replacement water was
released in June, July, August, and October to. offset the depletions for NambeFalls
operations in the amount of 1,136 AF, which is the equivalent release. from Heron,
Nambe Falls Reservoir ended 1999 atelevation 6,824,51 ft (1 ,903AF), A summary
of the reservoir operation is shown on Table 5 (page 5), and the return flow credits are
accounted for in Tables 6, 7, and 8 (page.s 6-8). " .
