Other agencies were supplied from storage in Palos Verdes
and Orange County reservoirs or from their own local sources.
Shutdown of the Orange County feeder was necessary on Jan-
uary 15, 1952 in order to make repairs at a leak in the iJ6-inch pipe
line one and one-half miles south of the softening plant. A 3-foot
collar was placed around the outside of the pipe to complete the
repairs. Other shutdowns were necessary to provide connections
for the Pomona Valley Municipal Water District at Diamond Bar
Ranch and for the City of Santa Ana at Delhi Road and Bristol
Street. During the latter shutdown additional regulating valves
were installed in the pressure regulating structure at Willits Street
in Santa Ana. Shutdown of the Long Beach lateral was necessary
three different times in order to remove the mainline venturi tube
at the Los Angeles River freeway crossing of the lateral and replace
it with a 22-foot section of steel pipe, reinstall the venturi tube at
a point farther west in the lateral, and to provide a connection for
the West Basin Municipal Water District in 223rd Street near Ala-
meda Street,
During the year District forces constructed three relief oper-
alors' cottages at San Jacinto, Orange County and Corona del Mar
reservoirs, and converted an existing 12-foot by 34-foot building at
Garvey reservoir site into a soil-testing laboratory. Several minor
alterations to District facilities were required because of street im-
provemenY work over pipe lines. At Morris Dam District forces
installed a multi-conductor overhead cable to provide for remote
recording of flows and water levels, and the operation from Morris
Dam of a control gate at the San Gabriel River crossing structure
of the upper feeder. A portion of the Orange County feeder was
encased by the District at the crossing of the Santa Ana freeway
under construction by the State Division of Highways,

Opr,ratioll of cittllS (lnd 1.(J(tlnu-t yrovcs
The District owns 62 acres of citrus and 22 acres of walnut
groves near La Verne, on which future softening and filtration plant
facilities will be constructed. These groves are being operated by
the District until the time when the trees must be removed to
make way for future plant expansion. Normal operation includes
cultivation, weed control, irrigating, fertilizing, pruning, spraying and
dusting. The quick decline disease which affects orange trees on sour
orange roolstocks became a serious problem in one section of the
