<br />,~!"'09 <br />..J" '-..J .. <br /> <br />28 <br /> <br />METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />Los Angeles, Long Beach, Torrance, Compton and the West Basin _ I <br />District. <br />The Santa Monica branch extends in a westerly and southwest- <br />erly direction from the Eagle Rock tower 24.5 miles to connect with <br />the Santa Monica water system at its Arcadia reservoir. Along this <br />pipe line there are two connections to the Glendale system, three to <br />the Burbank system, including a short lateral in Kenneth Road, two <br />to the Los Angeles city system, one to Beverly Hills, and one to <br />Santa Monica. <br /> <br />Sllll nir:{Jo aql/crlJ/d <br /> <br />In addition to the uppel' feeder and its branches, the distribution <br />system includes the northerly half of the San Diego aqueduct sup- <br />plying untreated water to the constituents of San Diego County <br />Water Authority. Under the terms of annexation, the District <br />agreed to assume payment of one-half the cost of the line over a <br />period of :30 years, and to take over the operation and maintenance <br />of the northerly half of the system. The District portion of the line <br />extends 36.3 miles southerly from the west portal of San Jacinto <br />tunnel to a point near the north end of the San Luis Rey River steel <br />siphon in San Diego County. This portion includes 34.8 miles of <br />pl"ecast concrete pipe varying fl'om 48 to 96 inches in diameter, a <br />six-foot tunnel 0.9 mile in length, and the San Jacinto regulating <br />reservoir with a usable capacity of 1,400 acre-feet. <br /> <br />Ct0/8!rlfdio}/ of fh{: di...trifntfil)/1 :.;ysfcl1I <br />The construction of the distribution system to serve the original <br />constituents of the District was completed in July 1941. After the <br />annexation of Coastai Municipal Water Distriet in June 1942, the 1 <br />Orange County feeder was extended from Santa Ana to the Coast <br />Highway at Corona del Mar being completed in February 1944. A <br />700-foot lateral was constructed to sen'e the City of Brea, which <br />was annexed to the Coastal District in September 1946. Construc- <br />tion of the San Diego atlueduct from the west portal of San Jacinto <br />tunnel to San Vicente reservoir in San Diego County was completed <br />by the U. S. Navy in November 1947. The San Marino lateral, about <br />one mile in length, was completed in October 1949: the 6.8-mile West <br />Basin lateral in April 1950 to serve the West Basin Municipal Water <br />District; the 2.8-mile Victoria Street lateral in June 1950, to provide <br />new connections for Long Beach and Compton; and the Eagle Rock <br />connection for the City of Los Angeles in April 1952. <br />
