<br />~. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />,-.., <br />i.. r: ,-.. 1 <br />.,)..- <br /> <br />CHAPTER 2 <br /> <br />OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM <br /> <br />THE distribution system is the means of wholesale delivery <br />of Colorado River water to component areas of the Metro- <br />politan Water District for retail distribution by existing <br />water supply agencies. Colorado River water is transported through <br />the 242-mile mail, aqueduct into a terminal reservoir, where a usable <br />storage of from 80,000 to 100,000 acre-feet is maintained. This main <br />storage reservoir, officially named Lake Mathews, is located in the <br />Cajalco basin south of the City of Riverside. Release from Lake <br />Mathews into the upper feeder of the distribution system is con- <br />trolled by an outlet tower and headworks. The present distribution <br />lines, varying from 16 to 152 inches in diameter, total 177.G miles <br />in length. <br />San Diego County is supplied through the 7L1-mile San Diego <br />aqueduct, which takes out of the main aqueduct at the west portal <br />of San ,Jacinto tunnel. The District maintains and operates the <br />northerly 36.3-mile portion of the San Diego aqueduct, ownership <br />of which is being acquired by annual payments to the San Diego <br />County Water Authority. The AuthOl'ity in turn is acquiring the <br />entire aqueduct in accord with its contract with the United States. <br />The District portion of the San Diego aqueduct added to the system <br />served from Lake Mathews gives the present distribution system a <br />total length of 213.9 miles. <br /> <br />Pipe lines and )'('.\uToirs <br /> <br />The upper feeder consists of concrete pipe, steel pipe, and con- <br />crete-lined tunnels. It extends 61.2 miles from Lake Mathews to the <br />Eagle Rock control tower on the westerly boundary of' the City of <br />Pasadena. The capacity of the upper feeder is 750 cubic feet per <br />second to the San Dimas turnout and 510 cubic feet per second from <br />that point to Eagle Rock. Near La Vel'lle the water is diverted <br />into a treatment plant where it is softened and filtered and returned <br />to the upper feeder for distribution to District areas.
