,

4.

,-~
williams DraJ~Qoad

The existing Williams Draw Road (designated FUK 505 and
County Road S) will be improved from the Bradfield Bridge over the Dolores
River to the intersection with County Road 16, a d~stance of 2.5 m~les.
Excessive grades will be reduced where feasible and tne road widened to 20
feet with 2-foot shoulders. Major earthwork will be required. This road
will also have a design speed of 30 miles per hour and an all-weather
surface.

5. Orimston Point Road and Ferris Road

Ormiston Point Road (designated FDR 521) and Ferris Road
(designated FDR 520) will have a combined length of 11.2 miles, connecting
Glade Road and Lone Dome Road. Ormiston Point Road will be constructed
following the general alignment of the Ormiston Point Road (FDR 521) and
will involve major earthwork. The existing Ferris Road will be improved
by widening and will link Glade Road and Ormiston Point Road. Both roads
will be 20 feet wide with 2-foot shoulders and will have all-weather sur-
faces and design speeds of 30' miles per hour.

C. Mitigation Measures

Measures to minimize impacts to big game were suggested in a mem-
orandum from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to Reclamation in December
1979. The memorandum suggested measures such as limiting the max~mum
design speed of the roads, having signs identifying migration corridors,
and restricting winter travel.

Roads upgraded would, as noted above, have posted speed limits.
The speed limit would be set at 40 miles per hour on county roads and 30
miles per hour on roads in the National Forest. The Dolores-Norwood road
is both county and National Forest and would be a 40 mile per hour road.
The Forest Service will maintain the roads during the spring, summer and
fall seasons. Winter access to vehicles would be limited, since neither
the Forest Service nor the counties plow these roads. Private commerc~a1
companies may be permitted open segments of the roads to obtain access to
parts of the forest.

Wildlife
game and

The Forest Service will cooperate with the Colorado Division of
in determining if signs are necessary on migration routes of big
will close critical winter range areas to snow mob~le use.

Disturbed areas along the road right-of-ways will be reseeded
following construction. Riprap will be placed along portions of the Lone
Dome Road to prevent excessive erosion along the banks of the Dolores
River. Excessive dust will be eliminated by watering roadways
periodically.

4
