With due consi deration
for all the water users affected and within the guidelines of our statutory
responsibilities, we are investigating the significance of long-term impacts

the drawdown may have on the i ndi vi dua 1 1 andowner, and to the enti re area

that eventually will be affected.

Another impact of drawdown is that approximately 60 miles of open
agricultural drains in the Yuma Valley will eventually become inactive as
a result of lowering the ground water elevation. Although drawdown will
benefit high water table areas in Yuma Valley, lowering of the water table
may require application of more irrigation water for certain deep-rooted

crops.

Lowering of the water table in the Yuma Valley and the cessation of

sustained flows in the Colorado River below More1os Dam will reduce

wildlife habitat in that area. In an effort to evaluate these losses,
the Bureau of Reclamation has contracted with several staff members of

Arizona ,State University for a complete inventory of these existing

resources.
