<br />Lining the first 49-mile reach of the Coachella Canal \~ill essentially
<br />eliminate reproduction of certain fish species in this reach of the canal,
<br />and will affect the remaining species. In addition, seepage from the
<br />canal will be reduced and approximately 3,700 to 4,500 acres of wildlife
<br />habitat consisting of wetlands and associated vegetation will lose seepage
<br />water contribution and suffer substantial loss.

<br />To determine specifically what fish, wildlife and recreation features
<br />
<br />are directly attributable to seepage loss from the canal, the Bureau of
<br />
<br />Reclamation has contracted with the California Fish and Game Department
<br />
<br />and San Diego State University of Calexico, to conduct field inventories
<br />
<br />of these resources. Reclamation, the Colorado River Board of California,
<br />and the Coachella Valley County Water District are investigating the
<br />hydrology of the area, availability of water for fish and wildlife use
<br />and the project responsibilities for mitigation. These studies are under-
<br />way and the results will be available by m'id-November for evaluation by
<br />an Ad Hoc Committee created to provide Reclamation with recommendations
<br />for Fish and Wildlife mitigation measures.

<br />The Ad Hoc Committee consists of representatives from California Fish and
<br />Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Imperial Irrigation District,
