Woodward-Clyde Consultants

(., r \1'~
U,;,;U..;

II. SITE GEOLOGY

1. Gene ral

Our analyses of geologic data concerning Narrows Darn has

involved discussions with Bureau staff members, field

examination of the site area and review of available materials

furnished by the Bureau. Data examined are listed as

References 1 and 22 through 27. This geologic review was made

with the primary objective of searching out geologic conditions

that could affect the safety of the dam and associated

structures, or that should be looked into by the geologists and

designers during final design.

No in-depth geology report had been prepared yet by the

Bureau. The geologic data made available to us, consisted of

some indirectly related reports containing brief references to

the site or some very preliminary reports prepared basically

for project planning use by the Bureau. Some early data were
prepared by the U.S. Corps of Engineers who considered the
flood control potential for the site. Some data are also

available from a Colorado School of Mines doctorate thesis and

from reports and analyses prepared for the Colorado Water

Conservation Board by private consultants. There have been

some 70 geologic IDB) borings made over the period 1944 to

1976, and logs of these borings are available as indicated on

the attached list of data. Two continuous Denison

(undisturbed) sample holes were recently drilled on the left

- 6 -

..
