,"

001639

.

.

- 2 -

The storm of June 17 flooded about 1600 acres of about 6000 acres of flood
plain land devoted to cropland and pasture. It is estimated that an additional
2500 to 3000 acres vould have been damaged vithout the project. This would be
an additional $250,000 of flood damage. In addition it is probable that the
towns of Elbert and Kiowa would have suffered severe damage without the project
estimated at $250,000 as a minimum. State and county bridges would have
been lost at an estimated additional cost of $200,000. This would total
additional damages of $700,000.

Follow-up of these estimates will occur in the course of preparation of the
Kiowa Project EValuation Report which will be completed in Fiscal Year 1966.

Franktown-Parker

The storm centered on this project in the drainage areas of three dams, W-l,
M-l and LG-2.

Dam W-l overtopped l~ to 2 feet. Spillway return was damaged,
rock and fill on downstream slope was eroded at least one foot.
cut from stream channel toward top of dam on southeast abutment.
damage about $15,000.

eroded to
A gully was
Estimated

Dam M-l overtopped about 2 feet. Gully developing up spillway return from
stream channel. Estimated damage $500.

Dam LG-2 functioned satisfactorily. No flood damage.

Total damage from this storm is estimated at over $200,000.

Benefits from project treatment include saving of a $20,000 home and
damage to hay meadows some 3 miles in length averaging \ mile wide.
roads including culverts vere saved from damage.

saving
County

Bi~ Sandy

The storm of June 17 centered in the northwest part of the watershed above
the Ramah structure. Three dams S-l, li-5 and Rwnah operated during the storm.
The remaining eleven structures received very minor runoff. Estimated
agricultural damages in El Paso County in the Big Sandy project total $99,800.
County road and bridge damage totaled $30,000. The three structures probably
prevented well over $500,000 damage betveen the R~ah dam and the city of
Limon. S-l dam overtopped and the cantilever section of the principal
spillvay discharge was lost. All three structures received some damage
estimated at $5,000.
