<br />J <br /> <br />.- <br /> <br />1101688 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />June 28, 1965 <br /> <br />UNITE;]) STATE::; DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ":-( <br />SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE-i <br />COLORADO <br /> <br />Storms of June 16 and 17. 1965 in Watershed Projects <br /> <br />During the week of June 14, 1965 cloudbursts exceeding estimated 100 year <br />frequencies were received on three watershed projects in eastern Colorado as <br />a part of the pattern of rainfall which covered a major portion of eastern <br />Colorado that week. <br /> <br />The three projects receiving such rainfall are listed together with a summary <br />of precipitation received. <br /> <br />Project <br /> <br />Precipitation <br /> <br />Kiowa <br /> <br />5:00 to 8:00 p.m., June 17, 1965 <br />from 3 to 9 inches - intensity 4-5 inches in 3 hours <br /> <br />Franktown-Parker <br /> <br />3:30 p.m. to 12:00 p.m., June 16.1965 <br />from 7 to 12 inches principally on areas above three <br />structures - intensity about 5 inches in 2~ hours <br /> <br />Big Sandy <br /> <br />1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., June 17 <br />8 inches principally on areas above R8l1lah, 8-1 and N-5 <br />dams - intensity about 8 inches in 3~ hours <br /> <br />Narrative covering the three projects follows: <br /> <br />Kiowa <br /> <br />Of 60 floodwater retarding structures, 30 were filled to capacity and flowed <br />through emergency spillways as much as 3~ feet in depth. Stream discharge <br />at the Kiowa bridge was about 30,000 c.f.s. Five of the retarding structures <br />were damaged in an estimated ~500 to $1000 amount. Some 26 farms received <br />flood damage (including 4 farmsteads) totaling an amount of $35,200. Other <br />agricultural damages are estimated at $18,300. One mile of county road and <br />~ mile of State highway was damaged, one bridge was washed out and 5 damaged. <br />There was a good grass cover on the land and terraces and stock water dams <br />held up well. <br /> <br />This storm was considered by local people to approach the extremely severe <br />storm of 1935 which took 7 lives and caused property damage in excess of <br />$2,000,000, including abffildonment of a branch line of the Colorado and <br />Southern Railroad. As a result of the storm of June 17 some $53,500 of <br />agricultural damage was done and non-agricultural damage of $18,500 totaling <br />$72,000. <br />
