Winter snow accumulation in the surrounding
drainage area was very light and; consequently, the April 1 forecast
indicated spring runoff would be well below normal. Spring weather
continued dry and, with inflows well below normal, it was necessary
to reduce March releases to prevent further decline in reservoir
storage levels. Storage increased slowly during April and May to
a seasonal peak of 604,650 acre-feet at elevation 4713.89 on May 13.
The peak storage was 11 feet below the top of the joint-use pool.

...:........

. :"~ ';.

.:~...::.:<.

'..
;:f1.:.-';...o:

:;:". During the 1977 irrigation
season, 125,900 acre-feet were released from Boysen Reservoir. This
storage release helped supply a major part of the irrigation requirement
for a number of irrigation districts and companies on the Wind and
Bighorn Rivers.

,,:.," .....,~.
:::.:.,',.
:/\}':

~t~~~t.i

:'.....
''';''. ~: . ~;;
0::>:'::::>

i;.:~\/.~:
'....

3
Reservoir releases were reduced from about 1,600 to 1,000 ft /s on
November 10 during a power maintenance outage, which occurred between
November 10 and December 1.

~~
(~~~{Lt
o'::'~'.': ';'

Ice problems on the Bighorn River were reported near Worland on
January 12. Spilling was started at this time to facilitate taking
the unit off line for repairs without the necessity of a sudden change
in the release rates to the river. Boysen releases were gradually
reduced from 1,600 ft3/s January 31, to the capacity of one powerplant
unit (1,100 ft3/s) on February 4, 1977.

..,:.' .
..,.....-..:
~:;:~?\ }.:.

> ~': ," ~:i
.;;~:..:., ',:. ...;

" '

.......,.:.

::.',.. ~.,;

...,..,.

18

"~(l,-"

...
