"! r~ .' ~
.LO.i._

Water Uses

Colorado niver Basin depletions in the Upper Basin are classified
by the Bureau of Reclamation as inbasin consumptive uses, transbasin
diversions, and reservoir evaporation. Irrigated agriculture is respon-
sible for most of the inbasin consumptive uses. The quantity of these
uses is estimated by applying unit "later use factors to estimates of
the land areas being irrigated. The Bureau of Reclamation estimates
of Colorado River "later depletions above Lee Ferry for the 1978 \'later
year are:

Acre-feet

Inbasin Depletions
Transbasin Diversions
neservoir Evaporation

2,420,000
936,000
550,000

Total, Upper Basin
Depletions

3,906,000

Table 3 shm'lS diversions less measured return floHs for the major
\'later users in the Loser Basin during the past five calendar years. As
can be seen, LO\'ler Basin use during 1975 was 317,000 acre-feet less than
the previous year's use. This decrease uas primarily the result of
reduced diversions by the 11etropolitan Hater District (rlr'JD). Because of
drought conditions in 1977, MIlD's supply of northern California "later
"ras greatly reduced and the District increased its use of Colorado River
l'later. In 1978, conditions returned to normal. This year, diversions
by the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation (FIUn) are sh01-m. The figures
are estimates made early in 1975 by FIIIRo 1977 figures are not yet
available. Only minor diversions \'lere made by FIUn prior to 1977.

TABLE 3
DIVERSIONS LESS I!~ASURED RETURNS
FOR filAJOR \'IATER USERS
LWER COLORADO RIVER
1971: to 1978
(Thousands of Acre-feet)

Calendar Year
California 1974 ,1975 1976 1977 1975
lfutropolitan Water Dist. 1,125 782 $00 1,285 715
Palo Verde Irrig.
