. (1 .t /
1';'j,:i

POI'Ter

The production of hydroelectric po':rer in Colorado River Basin
power plants constitutes a vital resource to the Basin states, both
for the energy generated and for the power revenues received. Tables
5, 6, and 7 show key aspects of hydroelectric power generation in 1978.

Operating levels and characteristics of the major reservoirs,
except Lakes j,lohave and Havasu, at the beginning and the end of the
I'Tater year are sho\'ffi in Table 5. Lakes Ilohave and Havasu \'/ere held
at relatively constant levels. All reservoirs except Crystal, Blue
r~sa, and Fontenelle stayed above rated head elevation throughout the
\'Tater year. Statistics on operating year \'rater releases from Hoover
Dam and electric generation are sho\-m in Table 6. Generation at Hoover
Dam during the 1977-7S operating year was 0.7 percent below the previous
operating year.

The Colorado River Board's 1963-64 Annual Report contains details
of the 1962 Glen Canyon Filling Criteria. These criteria establish an
accounting system to handle the reduced Hoover generation caused by
initial filling of the Colorado River Storage Project (CRSP) reservoirs.
Table 7 shows the monthly values for the 1975 operating year and water
year of the firm energy deficiency. Note that in 1978, the "deficiency"
'eras negative, uhereas in previous yearc: t;h9 total amount for the year
had all'Tays been a positive value. This means t,lat additional energy
was generated (J6G million kilolTati; hours durin/?; the 1978 water year)
because of CRSP reservoirs, Because 1977 liaS a record droUGht year,
Lake Head storage '.'rould have been less tha.., it actually 'eras bacause or
the additional releases of \!ater stored in ensp reservoirs, - ri th Lake
Head storaGe higher in 1978 'i;han it lJOuld have been irithout en3P, 'i;he
additional head resulted in more enerGY l)ein['; r;enerated.

- 7 -
