Within the
11.4 mile length of the South Canal irrigation waters are
diverted to a number of users. A map of the South Canal and
tunnel is shown on Plate A-l. The source of water for the

canal and tunnel is the Gunnison River.

Under the present operating conditions irrigation flows are
diverted from the Gunnison River into the tunnel and South
Canal by a low diversion dam located on the Gunnison River.
Water storage for the project is allocated from the Taylor
Park Reservoir, although under a temporary agreement water

has recently been obtained from the Blue Mesa Reservoir.

The total drainage area upstream of the diversion into the

Gunnison Tunnel is approximately 3965 square miles.

B. Present ODeration

The South Canal is operated by the Uncompahgre Valley Water
Users Association. Under the present mode of operation the
canal is used from mid-March to mid-October to provide
irrigation water to downstream users and domestic water

supply for the cities of Montrose and Delta. Table A-l

shows the average monthly flows diverted into the canal

since 1937 when the Taylor Park Reservoir was placed in

operation.
