Hearings to obtain the views of the public
on proposed Principles and Standards for
planning the Nation's water and land re-
sources were chaired by Director W. Don
Maughan in San Francisco, California, March
13 and 14; St. Louis, Missouri, March 15
and 16; and in Washington, D.C., on March
20, 21 and 22.

Director Maughan in a recent interview said,
"We are gratified that the potential impact
of the Council's proposal, complex as it is,
has attracted the public interest that it
has." A total of 206 oral statements were
presented at the three hearings across the
country and the written record is expected to
be about 10,000 pages long.

Testimony was presented by 35 U.S. Senators,
64 U.S. Congressmen, 2 Governors, 11 State
legislative bodies and 10 mayors. A total of
4,527 oral and written comments have been re-
ceived to da te.

Local and network radio and television stations
interviewed the Director and speakers at the
hearings, and over 60 newspaper articles have
appeared throughout the country.

Radio, television and news coverage of the
hearings provided the public with information
and stimulated additional public response
prior to the close of public review on
March 31, 1972.

The Record, including letters of comments and
written and oral testimony, can be inspected
during the hours of 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM, Monday
through Friday at the headquarters of the
Water Resources Council. Advance notice of
visits to inspect the record are not necessary
but would be appreciated so as to allow for
arrangement of facilities to meet the conven-
ience of all members of the public who wish to
inspect the record.
