I'~ .I "- <br />I~" '& L <br />to permit a daily production of 20 pipe sections or 320 linear feet. <br />Field construction work was started near the east end of the line <br />on February 23, 1949, and at the end of the fiscal year 4.3 miles <br />of pipe had been laid to a point on Manhattan Beach Boulevard <br />about one-quarter mile east of Prairie A venue. Most of the trench <br />was excavated with" ladder type trenching machine. A backhoe <br />and a clamshell were also used for portions of the work. De]ays <br />were experienced due to numerous substructures encountered and <br />due to unstable soil in deep trench sections at Figueroa Street, near <br />Ainsworth Street, and at Normandie Avenue. The average progress <br />for pipe laying has been 5,600 linear feet per month. A 3D-foot <br />steel incasement was jacked under the Pacific Electric Railway <br />tracks at Vermont Avenue. At the end of the fiscal year the <br />contractor's force wa~ 33 at the plant and 26 in the field. Seven <br />District employees were assigned to the work to make surveys and <br />provide supervision and inspection. <br /> <br />CONSTRUCTION <br /> <br />." '" 83 <br /> <br />COllsh'uction of San llfm'ino lateml <br /> <br />Bids were opened on May '17, 1949, for the construction of the <br />San Marino lateral, and the contract for this work was awarded <br />to the low bidder, Wucetich Construction, on May 20, 1949, for a <br />contract price of $66,702.10. The work involved is the construction <br />of 5,405 lineal' feet of 16-inch inside diameter steel cylinder concrete <br />pipe line from the upper feeder on the prolongation of Mountain <br />Street. southerly along North Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre <br />Boulevard to Walnut Street. Work on the fabrication of steel cy]- <br />inders for the pipe was being started at the end of the fiscal year. <br />Pipe wiII be manufactured under a subcontract by United Concrete <br />Pipe Corporation at Baldwin Park. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />Construction of Victuria Street lateral <br /> <br />Bids were opened on June 1, 1949, for the construction of the <br />2.79-mile Victoria Street lateral, and the contract for this work <br />was awarded to the low bidder, United Concrete Pipe Corporation, <br />on June 10, 1949 for a contract price of $555,302.10. The work <br />comprises 14,742 linear feet of 54-inch diameter precast concrete <br />pipe line construction beginning at a point on the Palos Verdes <br />feeder midway between 184th and 189th Streets and extending <br />easterly in private right of way and in Victoria Street to Wilming- <br />ton Avenue.
