I <br /> <br />, <br />,. <br /> <br />EN(;INEERING <br /> <br />59 <br /> <br />Vietod" Street lateral <br /> <br />Continued growth of the City of Long Beach has required <br />inauguration of an extensive program for expanding the city water <br />system. One of the facilities under construction consists of a dis- <br />tribution reservoir on Dominguez Hill, in unincorporated terri- <br />tory near the northwesterly city limits. In 1948 the city authorities <br />requested the District to provide facilities capable of delivering <br />70 cubic feet per second to the proposed new reservoir. The existing <br />36-inch lateral in 223rd Street for service to Long Beach has a <br />nominal capacity of only 30 cubic feet per second, which would not <br />meet the city's expected requirements after 1950, After investiga- <br />tion of various method;; of extending the aqueduct ;;ystem to provide <br />the de;;ired servic,e, plans were prepared for a 54-inch diameter <br />pipe line extending easterly 2.79 mile;; from the Palos Verdes feeder <br />to Wilmington Avenue at Victoria Street. From this point the city <br />will construct a pipe line 1.3 miles long to the reservoir site. The <br />Victoria Street lateral will be supplied initially from the Palo;; <br />Verdes feeder, but as other diversions from this feeder are expected <br />to require its full capacity in the near future, the Victoria Street <br />lateral was designed with a view to extending it easterly and <br />northerly some 35 miles to a junction with the upper feeder near <br />San Dimas where a total capacity of 750 cubic feet per ;;econd is <br />available, of which approximately 200 cubic feet per second is <br />available for diversion to the proposed new feeder. <br />Specifications for the Victoria Street lateral were prepared <br />covering two alternative types of construction for the 54-inch <br />diameter pipe line, namely, lock-joint steel cylinder-reinforced <br />precast concrete pipe, and welded steel pipe with spun mortar lining <br />and machine-placed gunitc or mortar exterior coating, A contract <br />was awarded June 10. 1949, to United Concrete Pipe Corporation <br />at its low bid of $555,302.10 for a precast concrete pipe line, The <br />line connects to the Palos Verdes feeder midway between 184th <br />and 189th Streets. and extends easterly in private right of way and <br />in Victoria Street to Wilmington Avenue, where a turnout is to be <br />provided for service to Long Beach, <br /> <br />Sf", Dieg" wllwr/uet <br /> <br />Comprehensive tests for determining the flow characteristics of <br />the San Diego aqueduct, made shortly after the line was p],lced <br />in operation in December 1947, had indicated a capacity 20 per <br />
