<br />c (' " 8 <br />,"w',;, <br />40 METHOI'OLIT"N WATEH DISTRICT <br /> <br />On August 5, 1948 the frequency change from 50- to 60-cycle <br />power was made at the plant. This change involved adjustment or <br />conversion of 402 pieces of eqnipment by the Southern California <br />Edison Company through the Bechtel Corporation, Except for <br />minor interruptions, the supply of electrical energy to the plant was <br />maintained continuously throughout the J'ear. Due to required <br />shutoffs of natural gas for industrial service at times of heavy <br />domestic demand in cold periods. it was necessary to change over <br />to fuel oil for the carbon dioxide boiler for a total of 36 days during <br />the year. <br />Four technical papers were prepared for presentation or publica- <br />tion. These covered the subjects of: (a) use of organic cation ex- <br />changers for municipal water "oftening; (b) effect of water quality <br />on ornamental phIllts; (c) sea water reclamation; and (d) begonia <br />culture. <br />The number of visitors to the plant during the fiscal J'ear ex- <br />ceeded 2,400 persons. These included prominent individuals from <br />all parts of the world, numerous clubs and civic organizations, <br />classes of students from universities and high schools in the south- <br />land area, and many others, <br /> <br />Chemitals fol' pla,lI. ope""tio1l <br /> <br />A total of 931 carloads of chemicals was delivered and unloaded <br />at the softening plant for use in the softening process. Included <br />were 2,096 tons of lime. 50,892 tons of sodium chloride, 537 tons <br />of alum, 76 tons of soda ,,,h, 194 tons of liquid chlorine, 1,835 tons <br />of "odium silicate, and 4 tons of activated carbon. <br />Lime, alum. soda ash, and sodium silicate were procured under <br />purchase order when required, Deliveries of sodium chloride neces- <br />sary for regeneration of the zeolite softener units were continued <br />under the three-year contract awarded during the fiscal year 1946- <br />47, Specifications were prepared, bids were received, and a new <br />contract was awarded for furnishing salt for a three-year period <br />starting in the early summer of 1950. <br /> <br />Zeulite i-nvestigctliolls <br /> <br />Observation and analysis of softener unit operation and zeolite <br />efficiency were continued with the purpose of inc,'easing the useful <br />life of the exchange mineral and decreasing "alt consumption, <br />Sodium silicate was fed to the zeolite influent water in order to <br /> <br />'I <br />
