~~S6

METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

Total income from sale of oranges, lemons, and walnuts for the
fiscal year was $16,266.92. Operating expenses were $19,271.88,
including $3,075.34 for taxes, making a net loss for the year of
$3,004,96, The total net profit from the groves since they were
purchased in July 1936 is $94,265,24,

Water sojtening and filtration plant

Except for six days of shutdown in March, the softening and
filtration plant operated continuously during the fiscal year 1948-
49. This, the first complete shutdown of operation since the plant
was put into service in 1941, was necessary in order that all the
water might be drained from the plant and pipe lines to permit
the installation of piping connections between the existing facilities
and the new plant expansion under construction. Because the in-
creased demand for water required operation of the plant for 69
days at flows greater than the present designed capacity of 100
million gallons per day, the hardness of the plant effluent water
exceeded the desired value of 125 parts per million for a part of
this period, Partial lime treatment preceding zeolite softening was
used for a total of approximately four months during the fiscal
year, while zeolite softening alone was used the remainder of the
time.
A new peak flow through the plant was reached on June 24, 1949
when 203,6 cubic feet per second, or 131.6 million gallons per day,
were softened. This is 31.6 per cent above the present designed
capacity of the plant. The monthly average rate of flow ranged
from a maximum of 168.5 cubic feet per second, or 108.9 million
gallons per day, in August 1948 to a minimum of 52.6 cubic feet
per second, or 34 million gallons per day, in January 1949. The
average daily flow through the plant for the fiscal year 1948-49
was 106.3 cubic feet per second, or 68.7 million gallons per day, an
increase of 5.0 per cent over the corresponding figures for the pre-
ceding fiscal year.
Due to increasing age and wear of the equipment considerable
repair, replacement, and maintenance 'were required, All the zeolite
effluent valves on the north side and one on the south side of the
softener building were completely overhauled. New metallized
leaves and new hook rods WE'rE.' in~t~llprJ in these valves. A new
guide bearing was installed on the east flash mixer. The old dilu-
tion valve in the zeolite building was replaced by a new one. The
tube ends in the carbon dioxide boiler were rolled and calked to
