I' f"} <br />'/.\J(Ji. <br /> <br />CHAPTER ~ <br /> <br />OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM <br /> <br />THE main storage reservoir of the Colorado River aqueduct <br />in the coastal area and the first feature of the distribution <br />system serving Los Angeles and Orange counties is Lake <br />Mathews, located in the Cajalco basin south of the City of River- <br />side. The 242-mile main aqueduct delivers Colorado River water <br />into this reservoir as required to maintain usable storage of from <br />80,000 to 100,000 acre-feet. Discharge from Lake Mathews into the <br />upper feeder of the distribution system is controlled by the outlet <br />tower, within the reoer"ol1-. and the headwork.< north of the dike <br />the two structures being connected by the outlet tunnel through <br />the we,t dike abutment. <br />The distribution system is designed for wholesale delivery of <br />Colorado River water to constituent areas of the Metropolitan <br />Water District and does not supply water directly to the individual <br />consumer. <br />A pOl,tion of the Compton lateral. consisting of 3.728 feet of 22- <br />inch steel pipe and 3,063 feet of 16-inch aslwstos-cement pipe, was <br />sold to the City of Compton in July 1948. After deducting this <br />length and adding the pipe lines under construction or contracted <br />for on June 30, 1949 the total length of the distribution system in <br />the coastal basin is 177,6 miles. Including the 36,3 miles in the <br />northerly half of the San Diego aqueduct, which the District is <br />acquiring by annual payments to the San Diego County Water <br />Authority, the total length of the present distribution system in the <br />5-county coastal area is 214 miles, <br /> <br />Constl'1l_ction of the di..,trihut,-io-n system <br /> <br />Construction of the distribution system to serve the thirteen <br />original eonOitituent areas of the District was completed in July <br />1941.
