The use of energy purchased by the District from Hoover Dam is
restricted to pumping Colorado River water into and in the aque-
duct, but the energy can be taken as required to meet the pumping
load. Parker energy may be used for any District purpose,
The contract for purchase of power from Hoover Dam under the
Boulder Canyon Project Adjustment Act imposes on the District the
obligation to pay the annual cost of operation and maintenance of
the generating equipment installed at the District's request together
with annuities to provide for replacement of such equipment and
to amortize its cost within a period of 50 years after its installation.
with interest at 3 per cent per annum. The District is also obligated
to pay. at rates fixed annually by the Secretary of the Interior, for
all of its allotment of firm energy whether used or not. The obliga-
tion to pay for unused energy was a heavy financial burden on the
District for several years but contracts made with the City of Los
Angeles and four private power companies have eliminated all cost
for unused energy reserved for District use subsequent to May
31, 1947.
Table 3 shows in kilowatthours for the years of operation from
1938 to 1949 the obligation of the District to pay for Hoover firm
energy, the amount of energy used hy the District. resold for the
credit of the District. and that remaining unused and not resold,
