The operation and maintenance of the pumping plants, trans-
mission lines and telephone system required an average force of 80,
Total replacements during the year were 29, a monthly turnover
rate of 3 per cent. The replacements were mostly of utility men
and kitchen helpers.
The following table shows the hours of pump operation, the
energy used, and the acre-feet of water delivered during the fi,;cal
year 1948-49:
The District's power supply, through contracts with the U. S. Bu-
reau of Reclamation, is adequate to meet all requirements of the
foreseeable future, The District owns the perpetual right to the use
and benefit of two 25,000-kilowatt generating units installed in the
powerhouse at Parker Dam, together with the right to utilize for
the production of power slightly less than one half of the water
passing Parker Dam. It has, until May 31, 1987, the right to the
use of two 82,500-kilowatt generators, units N5 and N6 at Hoover
Dam, and an option on a third 82,500-kilowatt generator, unit N7,
The total of 297,500 kilowatts of generating capacity thus avail-
able is sufficient to operate eight pumps in each of the five pumping
plants.
The District's allotment of 35.2517 percent of the firm energy at
Hoover Dam amounted to 1,492 million killowatthours for the oper-
ating year 1948-49 and will gradually decrease to 1,375 million
kilowatthours in the year ending May 31, 1987. The District's
share of the energy generated at Parker Dam is conservatively esti-
mated at 300 million kiIowatthours per year, making the aggregate
supply at least 1,675 million kilowatthours, or sufficient to pump
800,000 acre-feet annually through the aqueduct lift of 1,617 fcet.
