... r' (' ,.., ~\,j\)- 4 METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT A contract for constructing the pipe line to deliver softened Colorado River water to West Basin Municipal Water District was awarded to the low bidder, United Concrete Pipe Corporation, on December 17, 1948. Fabrication of pipe sections was begun in Jan- uary and laying of pipe in February. On June 30, 1949 approxi- mately 66 per cent of the contract work had been finished, The construction of the 16-inch San Marino lateral 5,405 feet long was provided for in a contract awarded to Wucetich Construc- tion, the low bidder. on May 20, 1949. Fabrication of pipe sections 1 was started, in June with pipe laying scheduled for August, This . pipe line will complete the connection of all the 13 original District cities to the Colorado River aQuednct.. On June 10, 1949 a contract was awarded the low bidder, United Concrete Pipe Corporation, for constructing the Victoria Street lateral. This work involves construction of a 2.79-mile pipe line from the Palos Verdes feeder, between 184th and 189th Streets easterly in Victoria Street and in private property to Wilmington A venue, for service to the cities of Compton and Long Beach. District forces completed in June three service connections to the Palos Verdes feeder, located at Casaba Road, Walnut Street near 247th Street, and at Fairview Avenue and Appian Way, for delivery to constituents of the West Basin District, and one connec- tion to the Orange County feeder below the Coroua del Mar reser- voir to serve the City of Newport Beach, a constituent of the Coastal District. Area, population, (Old assessed valuIIti()n During the fiscal year small annexations were made to some of the original member cities and annexations of considerable areas to Coastal Municipal Water District and to San Diego County Water Authority. In addition the West Basin Municipal Water District annexation was completed July 23, 1948 followed by an enlargement of its boundaries in December. The total increase in area of the Metropolitan Water District. from July 1, 1948 to June 30, 1949, was 112,68 square miles, and the increase in population was esti- mated to be 273,500 people. Of this number about two thirds came in through annexation. In table 1 are shown for each constituent of The IV!etropolitan WHtpr District of Southern California, the area, the estimated population, and the assessed valuation of prop- erty subject to taxation for District purposes, as they existed on July 1,1949.
