<br />... r' (' ,.., <br />~\,j\)- <br />4 <br /> <br />METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />A contract for constructing the pipe line to deliver softened <br />Colorado River water to West Basin Municipal Water District was <br />awarded to the low bidder, United Concrete Pipe Corporation, on <br />December 17, 1948. Fabrication of pipe sections was begun in Jan- <br />uary and laying of pipe in February. On June 30, 1949 approxi- <br />mately 66 per cent of the contract work had been finished, <br />The construction of the 16-inch San Marino lateral 5,405 feet <br />long was provided for in a contract awarded to Wucetich Construc- <br />tion, the low bidder. on May 20, 1949. Fabrication of pipe sections 1 <br />was started, in June with pipe laying scheduled for August, This . <br />pipe line will complete the connection of all the 13 original District <br />cities to the Colorado River aQuednct.. <br />On June 10, 1949 a contract was awarded the low bidder, United <br />Concrete Pipe Corporation, for constructing the Victoria Street <br />lateral. This work involves construction of a 2.79-mile pipe line <br />from the Palos Verdes feeder, between 184th and 189th Streets <br />easterly in Victoria Street and in private property to Wilmington <br />A venue, for service to the cities of Compton and Long Beach. <br />District forces completed in June three service connections to <br />the Palos Verdes feeder, located at Casaba Road, Walnut Street <br />near 247th Street, and at Fairview Avenue and Appian Way, for <br />delivery to constituents of the West Basin District, and one connec- <br />tion to the Orange County feeder below the Coroua del Mar reser- <br />voir to serve the City of Newport Beach, a constituent of the Coastal <br />District. <br /> <br />Area, population, (Old assessed valuIIti()n <br /> <br />During the fiscal year small annexations were made to some of <br />the original member cities and annexations of considerable areas <br />to Coastal Municipal Water District and to San Diego County Water <br />Authority. In addition the West Basin Municipal Water District <br />annexation was completed July 23, 1948 followed by an enlargement <br />of its boundaries in December. The total increase in area of the <br />Metropolitan Water District. from July 1, 1948 to June 30, 1949, <br />was 112,68 square miles, and the increase in population was esti- <br />mated to be 273,500 people. Of this number about two thirds came <br />in through annexation. In table 1 are shown for each constituent <br />of The IV!etropolitan WHtpr District of Southern California, the <br />area, the estimated population, and the assessed valuation of prop- <br />erty subject to taxation for District purposes, as they existed on <br />July 1,1949. <br />
