<br />The population of the south coastal area continues to grow and
<br />was estimated to be 5,200,000 on July 1, 1949, Total taxable sales
<br />of merchandise during 1948 in the five counties were $5,856,895,000,
<br />or 51.4 per cent of the state total of $11,398,358,000, From data
<br />fnrnished by the Security-First National Bank the per capita retail
<br />sales in Los Angeles County in 1948 were $1,237 compared with
<br />$889 for the United States as a whole,
<br />Agricultural production of the five counties in 1948, including
<br />livestock, dairy products, poultry, fruits, nuts, and truck and field
<br />crops, exceeded $518,000,000, almost 5 per cent greater than in 1947,
<br />Production of petroleum and natural gas in the Los Angeles basin
<br />in 1948, as reported by Western Oil and Gas Association, consisted
<br />of 93,548,000 barrels of crude oil and 108,266,000,000 cubic feet of
<br />natural gas from Los Angeles County fields and 37,565,000 barrels
<br />and 32,174,000,000 cubic feet, respectively, from Orange County
<br />fields. These totals represent a daily production in the basin of
<br />359,200 barrels of crnde oil and 384,800,000 cubic feet of na-
<br />tural gas,

<br />Due to the continuing drought conditions within the coastal area,
<br />delivery of natural Colorado River water to the San Diego County
<br />Water Authority was at practically fnll capacity of the San Diego
<br />aqueduct throughont the year, The total quantity released from
<br />San Jacinto reservoir into the San Diego aqueduct was 71,642,6
<br />acre-feet, at an average rate of approximately 99 cubic feet per
<br />second. Delivery of natural Colorado River water from Lake
<br />Mathews to the U.S. Army was continued on a small scale totaling
<br />55.3 acre-feet for the year,
<br />Softened amI filtered Colorado River water was delivered to all
<br />constituents of the District except the City of San Marino, first
<br />delivery to the newly annexed West Basin Municipal Water District
<br />being made in June 1949, Total delivery to constituents was
<br />73,237.1 acre-feet, at an average rate of 102,5 cubic feet per second.
<br />Among the larger users of softened water Santa Monica drew 97,7
<br />per cent of its supply from the aqueduct, Anaheim 94,9, Santa Ana
<br />84.7, Pasadena 66.8, Long Beach 46.2. and Torrance 42,9, Softened
<br />
<br />v:uter was supplied to l\fount San .Antonio Junior College near
<br />Spadra under a contract made in 1948 with the Junior College Dis-
<br />trict. This delivery from the Orange County feeder totaled 73,1
<br />acre-feet during the fiscal year.
