<br />,. r',~.:' l, <br />'~;JJ-' <br /> <br />C II APT E R 7 <br /> <br />PURCHASING AND SALVAGE, RIGHT OF <br />WAY, PERSONNEL, AND <br />MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES <br /> <br />Pu/'c!l-a,'dil-g and salvage <br /> <br />PURCHASES aggregating $483,000 through the issuance of <br />:~,33:~ purchase orders and purchase agreements measure the <br />activity of the purchasing division for the fiscal .rear. In <br />addition to the usual supplies for the operation of the entire <br />Colorado River aqueduct system, a great deal of material in the <br />way of valves, piping, and equipment for the softening plant <br />expansion and for various new distribution system connections <br />was included. The value of the salt, zeolite. chlorine, and a portion <br />of the valves procured under formal contract, approximating <br />$480,000, is not included in the purchase amount given above. Car- <br />loads of freight delivered totaled 981 consisting of 847 cars of <br />sodium chloride. 40 of lime, 16 of zeolite, 14 of liquid chlorine. 10 <br />of alum, 1 car of copper sulfate, and three cars of valves. Total <br />cost of transportation including hundreds of less than carload rail <br />and truck shipments exceeded $150.000. <br />Although w!lrehouse stocks of the local vendors were in most <br />cases up to prewar levels, many items of toolo were still not readily <br />ohtainable. Wartime substitutes are gradually being discontinued <br />and quality of products is generally improving. <br />The larger and more important purchases included assemblies <br />for more than 25 new air conditioning units for installation in the <br />pumping plants and camp cottages; fourteen I/~-ton and ~:'I.-ton <br />pickups, 8 dump trucks, 10 sedans, one coupe, and two suburban <br />carryalls to replace station wagons. Other items of special note <br />included valves ranging from 4-inch to 20-inch in size; venturi <br />tubes and flow meters, p!'Opeller meters, and miscellaneous metal- <br />work for new connections; and sluice gates, pumps. and a lime <br />conveyor e]ev!ltor for the softening plant expallHion. Chlorination <br />equipment for the San Jacinto reservoir outlet of the San Diego <br />aqueduct and fish screens for installation in the aqueduct inlet <br />were also procured. <br /> <br />1%] <br /> <br />j <br />I <br />
