Otherbeneiicial purposes. As the bulk of the lands in the region are <br /> <br />under Federal jurisdiction, the public lands have beeu the object of demand <br /> <br />by governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, and individuals, to be <br /> <br />used for homesites, business sites, industrial sites; rights-of-way and ease- <br /> <br />ments for roads, microwave stations, and various utilities, public purposes, <br /> <br />such as parks, s.chools, recreation facilities, 'churches, hospitals, and <br /> <br />refuse disposal sites; as well as for such purposes as national defense in- <br /> <br />stallati9ns, " wildlife refuges, air navigation facilities, etc, Accommodating <br /> <br />these requests for lands is a major function of the Bureau, The Bureau <br /> <br />maintains the basic land title and survey records for the Federal Government, <br /> <br />, as well as being responsible for the survey and monumentation of the public <br /> <br />. lands ,so that they might be identified and described to facilitate management <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />or' title transfer. <br /> <br />To better fulfill its functions, the Bureau cooperates with appropriate <br /> <br />Federal, State, and local agencie s.
