<br />OOlJ14 <br /> <br />provide a high degree of protection to Las Animas and the surrounding <br /> <br />agricultural areas from floods on the Arkansas River. <br /> <br />Another feature of the plan, which is rather novel for local pro- <br /> <br />taction projects such as this one, is a 19~acre recreation lake that wi II <br /> <br />be suitable for maintaining fish life. The inclusion of this feature was <br /> <br />mcde possible by recent legislation which allowG consideration of recreation <br /> <br />development In all types of water resources projects rather than reservoir <br /> <br />projects only. The lake wi II be located In an area which the city owns <br /> <br />and plans to develop as a pUblic park. The water surface of the lake wi II <br /> <br />be at groundwater level and the excavated material will be used in the <br /> <br />levees. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Colorado Department of <br /> <br />Game and Fish have cooperated extensively In the planning of this recreational <br /> <br />faci I ity and have made many beneficial comments and suggestions_ Likewise, <br /> <br />the U.S. Public Health Service and the Colorado Department of Public Health <br /> <br />have gone to considerable effort to render assistance. <br /> <br />The plan will be presented to local officials and other interested <br /> <br />parties in the near future at which time the items of local cooperation <br />./ <br />required by law will be explained and assurances that such cooperation wi II <br /> <br />be forthcom I ng w ill be requested. Tho exact date of the meet I ng hes not <br /> <br />been set as yet, but the Colorado Water Conservation Board will be notified <br /> <br />of the time and place and it is hoped that a representCltlve wi II be present. <br /> <br />The Albuquerque District also is conducting an investigation of the <br /> <br />water resources problems and needs in the Arkansas River Basin above John <br /> <br />3 <br />
