Title of Project: Development of Aspinall Consultation Work Plan
III. Principal Investigator: Frank K. Pfeifer, Project leader

name: Chuck HcAda
organization: Colorado River Fishery Project
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
address: 529 255 Road, Suite B-110
Grand Junction, CO 81505
phone: (303) 245-9319 FTS 322-0364

IV. Study Schedule:

a. initial year: FY 90
b. final year: FY 91

V. Study Goals and End Products (as described in the approved scope of
work):

Goal: Identify important changes to the hydrologic, temperature, and
sediment regimes of the Gunnison and Colorado rivers and to develop
hypothesis that describe the probable negative effects of these changes
on the endangered fishes.

End Product: Use the information summarized above to develop a work
plan which identifies studies important to the Aspinall Unit
consultation.

VI. How is this study contributing towards recovery? Are the goals being
met? (please describe in your own words):

The biological opinion to be prepared on the operation of the Aspinall
Unit will play an important role in the effective management of the
Gunnison and Colorado rivers for the endangered fishes. This scope of
work developed an outline to guide studies addressing the effects of the
Aspinall Unit on the endangered fishes of the upper basin. The data
collected during these studies will ultimately be used to write the
biological opinion on operation of the Aspinall Unit. The study plan is
flexible and allows modification when data or other factors indicate
that additional questions need to be answered or a different study
methodology will be more effective. The study outline provides a
mechanism for the coordination necessary among the many researchers and
other participants in developing the studies and ultimately the
Biological Opinion.
