Big Sandy Unit - The FWS expressed concern that the
~EA/FONSI lacked information to adequately evaluate proposed
~
~replacement of fish and wildlife habitat values foregone
resul ting from the reduction in wetland acreage. FWS also

requested formal consultation under Section 7 of the

Endangered Species Act to offset any adverse impacts of the
project on endangered species. The FWS supports the goal of
salinity reduction in the Colorado River Basin and believes

it can be accomplished with minimal loss of wetland values.

However, this will require a concerted effort to develop

creative means to address the issue of replacement of

incidental fish and wildlife values forgone.

Lower Virgin River - The FWS has proposed designation of

critical habitat for the proposed endangered Virgin River

Chub, Federal Register June 24, 1986.

It is the Forum's

understanding that the location of the habitat would have
little impact on salinity control units in the Lower Virgin
River. The Forum has requested FWS keep it advised of any
further plans with respect to fishery management in the

Virgin River.

Geological Survey
The Geological Survey's Water Resources Division

provides and analyzes hydrologic information to assess the

Nation's water resources.

Programs are developed with

cooperation and financial support from state, local, and

other federal agencies.
