,r7~
V~ -

According to the Draft Environmental statement, about
750 residents, four businesses, and several service facilities in
the project area will be relocated. The residents included members
of about 150 farm families and 70 families from the communities of
Orchard, Goodrich, and Wildona. The latter will no longer exist
as communities. The facilities and lands of the Weldon Valley
School will be acquired. Thirty graves in the Riverview Cemetery
will be relocated to cemeteries outside of the reservoir area. Two
churches will be either relocated or terminated as church organiza-
tions. The Weldon Valley Ditch Company assests will be acquired.

All land acquisition and relocation of residents will be
in accordance with the requirements of the Uniform Relocation
Assistance and Real Property Acquisition policies Act of 1970
(84 Stat. 1894). Federal provisions for relocation include reim-
bursement at fair market price for holdings and paid expenses
associated with moving and locating suitable replacement property.

The principal environmental impact of the Narrows Dam
and Reservoir will be the inundation of several miles of stream
channel. , No significant stream fishery now exists in that portion
of the river. However, a considerable reservoir fishery will be
created by the water impounded in the reservoir.

Some loss of nesting sites for waterfowl and upland
game birds will occur. However, waterfowl use of the area is
expected to increase significantly as the result of the reservoir
impoundment. The hunting area for small upland game will be
decreased but will be increased for waterfowl.

No adverse downstream water-quality effects are antici-
pated. The operation of the dam and reservoir will reduce the
seasonal and cyclical fluctuations in the water supply and permit
water of better quality to be applied to irrigated lands.

Historical or archaeological sites or resources were
surveyed in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act.
Protection and preservation of historic and cultural resources will
be as required by Executive Order 11593 and 36 CFR 800.

The South Platte Valley below Denver is one of the leading
agricultural areas of the United States. It is also a major live-
stock feeding and processing center. Chronic shortages of available
water supplies lead to chronic litigation and reduced crop yields.
The only remaining flows available in the South Platte River for use
in Colorado are those which escape at the state line during floods

-3-
