. Avoid watering when windy or in heat of day.

. Sprinklers
throwing
large drops
of water in
a flal pal-
tern are
more effec-
tive Ihan
those with
fine, high
sprays.

. Forget about watering streets, walks and driveways.
They won't grow a thing.

Mother Nature's Turn

. Adjust lawn watering to the weather. Following a
heavy rain, skip the regular watering schedule until
the grass needs it. Know how to turn off automatic
sprinkling system until needed again.

. Delay regular watering of grass the lirst cool weeks

of spring to encourage deeper rooting.

. Use root-watering devices on shrubs, trees, strips
of grass and areas near concrete. Or waler by hand
any small areas of grass to avoid runoff. Soakers
help prevent runoff on slopes.

. When watering n,ear concrete, push a root leeder or
water aerator into the soil 12 to 16 inches from the
concrete. Force Ihe water jets down to a depth of
four to six inches. When the grass raises up like a
bubble, remove spike and repeat operation 12 to 16
inches further along grass edge.

Don't Scalp Me!

. Keep grass length fairly long; taller grass holds
moisture better. Cut lawn fairly often, so that only '12
to % inch of grass is cut off. Otherwise grassblades
turn yellow from excessive shock. Suggested cutting
lengths: Merion bluegrass: 1'1.-1'12"; Windsor blue-
grass: 1'12"; Kentucky biuegrass: 1'/.-2".

. Mulch flower and vegetable gardens, shrubs and
other plantlngs so the soil holds moisture longer.

. Water flow can be controlled at the water outlet, by
the type of sprinkler used, and by the size of the gar-
den hose. More is dispensed faster with a larger di-
ameter hose.

,.,

~f> ~ "
" "
( Of 01 ,n I,
lh
:If "
H ~

Jlli(> (A ,r
)vip I :olor mUll " OQI ,t
In lifj It y
:trll Jell

A Ja~;sroom progr:-H1 H 'lSf V
lion oy a c ~rtifled tf lIer 3\ ;)t; lI{ 11 md
6th grades in the Denvpt me! ~)I lli1 In "e,
features experiments.
