Those Telltale Footprints

. Develop an aW;lreness of when the lawn needs wa-
tering. When grass turns a dull grey, green. and
when footprints remain when one walks acrosslhe
lawn, ll's time to water. But if most of the.lawn slill
looks green and
only spots or
areas near con-
crete are grey, 1
root-water or
hand-water just !
the dry spots.
. If a bluegrass
lawn thrives on
45 mlnules of
CO watering every
If) two or three dilYs, it will nol remain as healthy by
Owatering 15-20 minutes daily. Less frequent but
<:) heavier watering encourages a deeper rool system
to beller withstand hot weather. The lawn also won't
thrive on 1'/2 hours of wale ring every five or six
days. The soil can't absorb that much all at once;
extra waler just runs off.

Set The Clock?
. If a half-hour selling with a sprinkler is whal your
lawn needs, keep track af the lime. A sprinkler left
on overtime in one spol wastes water. Set an alarm
clock or limer as a reminder.

;,

. If you have an automallc sprinkling system, make
sure it Is not soaking the lawn too often and too long.
Most bluegrass lawns need 1'12 Inches of water a
week, usually 'I. Inch al a time.
· Automatic sprinkler systems should be operated
duling hours when Ihe Denver water syslem experi-
ences the least demand - 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
· Most soli in the Denver area is clay; this' heavy soli
will absorb about '12 inch of water per hour. When
water slarts to run off, turn off the sprinkler until
the lawn needs watering a few days laler. Sandy
soli needs watering more alien but for shorter peri-
ods of lime.
. Sunny, soulh sides of buildings, or slopes, or areas
near sidewalks and driveways usually require waler.
lng more alien. Shady or north IDeations need wa-
tering less frequently.
