4

OQll20

were focused principally upon utilization of the available water

to supplement the irrigation supply of irrigated lands between

the Colorado-Kansas State line and Garden City.

A survey of irrigation practices and the need for supple-

mental water in the area between the State line and Garden City

revealed a very complex and intermingled pattern of irrigation

utilizing surface flows diverted from the river and ground water.

The results of the surveys were discussed with the State of Kansas,

the water users, and the Corps of Engineers. It was agreed that a

cooperative study should be made to determine the extent of present

ground water use and the effect of continued development on the

ground water aquifer, and that the Bureau would continue studies

of the most feasible way to conserve and utilize the surplus flows

of the Arkansas River.

In cooperation with the State of Kansas the Bureau completed

an inventory of irrigation wells in the area. Depth to water in

representative wells was measured. Well logs, geological data,

historic yields, and other information were accumulated. Partici-

pation by the State, the U.S.G.S. and local interests in furnishing

equipment and record data helped materially in the work. Geologic

sections were plotted and the ground water data analyzed. The

studies provided no conclusive information on the future status of

ground water pumping and emphasized the need for a comprehensive

ground water study in the area prior to plan fonnulation. The State

of Kansas in cooperation with the U.S.G.S. has programmed such a

study; however, its completion is indefinite. Inasmuch as the
