6

0021.

PART III
WATER SUPPLY

Historic streamflow

The average historic discharge of the Arkansas River at the

Colorado-Kansas State line amounted to about 262,000 acre-feet

annually for the period 1921 through 1956. The annual streamflow

has been quite erratic reaching a high of 1,342,000 acre-feet in
1942 and a low of 31,000 acre-feet in 1940.

Irrigation ditches in Kansas have diverted, on the average,

90,000 acre-feet of the flows mentioned above. The annual diver-
sions were as low as 19,000 acre-feet in 1940 and as high as
165,000 acre-feet in 1948, depending largely on the water avail-

able during the irrigation season.

A study of the gross natural sectional gains or losses in

the river channel between the State line and Garden City shows

that during the period 1921-1956 the average annual accretion

from the State line to Syracuse amounted to 11,300 acre-feet,

whereas from Syracuse to Garden City a loss of 12,500 acre-feet

occurred. Streamflow records for the river at Dodge City for the

period 1921-1956 are not complete. However, the estimated annual

gross natural river accretion, during this period, from Garden

City to Dodge City amounted to 42,000 acre-feet. There are no

appreciable diversions between Garden City and Dodge City.
