~ ..,......,r- ')
'J '.).... . ,) .....

CHANNEL AND CONTROL.--Streambed consists of large boulders and
rocks which are apparently permanent. The stream is in the
bottom of a canyon so the banks are steep and rocky. Channel
is straight for 500 ft downstream from gage. A deep pool
extends about 300 ft upstream from the station with a slight
curve to the right. Flow downstream from the station is swift
and turbulent. The control, a natural riffle, is located 250 -
300 ft downstream at a slight angle across the stream from left
to right. Some moss growth is experienced due to upstream
reservoir. .

DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS.--Sta~es below 2.0 ft can be waded in
vicinity of cableway. Med1um and hi~h stages measured from
cableway 300 ft downstream from stat10n. Cross-section at
cable is very rocky but flow is fairly uniform. Measurements
should be good if care is taken to keep subsections within
percentage.

CABLEWAY DATA.--3j4-inch galvanized cable; clear span, 188 ft;
total length, 225 ft: unloaded sag, 3 ft. Right side A-frame
H-beam 8 ft high. No A-frame on left side. Right anchor is a
concrete block 4' X 6' X 3'. Left anchor is a pin grouted into
rock cliff. Cable marked at 5 ft intervals. Stand-up type car
stored on left bank. Main cable replaced September, 1990.

FLOODS.--Maximum discharge observed during period of record,
19,000 ft'js June 15, 1921 (gage height, about 15.8 ft, present
datum) .

POINT OF ZERO FLOW.--0.54 ft, October 20, 1971.

WINTER FLOW.--Releases from crystal Reservoir keep stream open
during winter.

REGULATION AND DIVERSION.--Natural flow of stream effected by
transmountain diversion through Gunnison Tunnel for irrigation
of about 75,000 acres in the Uncompahgre Valley, Taylor Park
Reservoir (capacity 106,200 aC-ft); Blue Mesa Reservoir
(capacity, 829,600 aC-ft) Morrow Point Reservoir (capacity,
121, 200 ac-ft); Crystal Reservoir (capacity, 25,200 ac-ft);
diversions for about 63,000 acres, and return flow from
irrigated areas.

ACCURACY.--Records usually good.

PURPOSE AND COOPERATION.--A, station is operated to collect basic
surface water records for downstream adjudication of water
rights. Colorado State Engineer.

0.0
5.2
5.2
5.4
10.6
4.0
14.6

ROAD LOG

Bridge over Cedar Creek at east end of
Montrose Main Street (U.S. Highway 50)

Turn left on Black Canyon National
Monument Road.

Turn right - road is rather steep on
entrance into canyon.

Caretaker's house and BOR building - gage.
