<br />At a depth of 40 feet at the dam site, the reservoir would occupy
<br />1,280 acres and have a capacity of 14,680 acre-feet. In the next
<br />10-foot interval of depth the surface area would increase to 2,200
<br />acres and the capaeity would be 32,080 acre-feet. Its potential
<br />capacity is beyond any volume that might be needed to develop this
<br />stream. The project might be utilized to develop a water supply
<br />for the irrigation of lands in the valley below. It is of sufficient
<br />magnitude that, if found feasible, it might serve interests in both
<br />Kansas and Nebraska and be constructed for j oint use. These, of
<br /><:OUl'se, are proposals which merit study and must be given further
<br />consideration in order to reach conclusions as to the degree of de-
<br />velopment which might be economically justified.

<br />SOUTH FORK OF THE REPUBLICAN RIVER
<br />
<br />There is a reservoir site on the South Fork of the Republican river
<br />in Colorado, near Hale, about one-half mile west of the state line in
<br />which a water supply might be impounded. It is not likely that
<br />.any substantial amount of water would be utilized directly in the
<br />valley below, as the land is sandy, the water table is near the sur-
<br />face,. and overflows are frequent. There is a possibility.. however,
<br />that it could be used on an area of land suitable for irrigation soutb
<br />.of Wheeler in Cheyenne county.
<br />A preliminary survey was made to determine whether it would be
<br />physically possible to take water from such a reservoir and convey
<br />it in a canal to these lands on which it could be used. The surveys
<br />indicate that it can probably be done.
<br />The investigations so far made in the Republican river basin deal
<br />in a preliminary way with only certain specific proposals, which,
<br />even together, do not involve nearly all of the problems of the
<br />whole Kansas portion of the basin. The preparation of a complete
<br />state plan of water resources development for the Republican river
<br />basin in Kansas will be undertaken at the earliest opportunity and
<br />at that time will be given the detrliled consideration which it merits.
<br />The limited extent to which it is reported on herein is only for the
<br />purpose of indicating what work has already been done.

<br />REPUBLICAN RIVER COMPACT
<br />
<br />It is expected that the development of water supplies on tributa-
<br />ries of the Republican river will be governed and limited by the pro-
<br />visions of an interstate compact. Such a compact was drafted in
<br />1941 and was ratified at that time by the legislatures of the three
