basins. Along this ridge drainage is generally north to the Platte
river and south to the Arkansas river. At its intersection with the
western boundary of the Republican river watershed, which is in a
general north-and-south direction, drainage is to the east into the
Republican and Smoky Hill river systems which slope to an eleva-
tion of 1,080 feet above sea level at Junction City, Kan.
The Kansas portion of the upper basin is wholly on the south side
of the river. The Prineipal tributaries here are the Arikaree river,
South Fork of the Republican river, Beaver, Sappa and Prairie Dog
creeks. Each drains a relatively long and narrow area in a north-
easterly direction to the river. The flow is intermittent, occurring
principally as surface runoff during periods of wet weather. The
preliminary surveys made in this basin by the Division of Water
Resources were conducted in this area.
In order to supply information needed by the Bureau of Reclama-
tion in connection with their studies of the Kansas portion of the
basin on which they were engaged, and to direct their attention to
the possible development in this area, surveys and maps were made
of reservoir sites on Prairie Dog ilnd Sappa creeks and of the loca-
tion for a canal to take water from the South Fork of the Republican
river to lands in Cheyenne county.

PRAIRIE DOG CREEK

Two sites were surveyed on Prairie Dog creek in Norton county.
The lower dam site is located in seetions 24 and 25 in T. 2 S., R. 22
W., about one mile north and one-half mile east of Calvert. At this
location a dam capable of storing water to a depth of 40 feet would
create a reservoir of 1,170 acres with a capacity of 16,800 acre-feet.
The upper Prairie Dog creek dam site is located in sections 8 and
17 in T. 3 S., R. 23 W., about 21Jz miles west and 1% miles south of
Norton. A reservoir 45 feet deep at this location would have have a
surface area of 1,200 acres and a capaeity of 16,860 acre-feet.
The surveys provide data on the basis of which some of the merits
of the two locations may be compared and a determination made of
the usefulness of a reservoir in developing the water supply of
Prairie Dog creek.

SAPPA CREEK

Another reservoir site which has been surveyed is located on
Sappa creek in Decatur county. The dam site is in sections 15 and
22, T. 3 S., R. 29 W., about 2 miles west and 2 miles south of Oberlin,
just below the junetion of the north and south forks of Sappa creek.
