For these, purposes it would be
necessary that, the dams control substantial portion;; of t.he drainage
ilrea and yet. be locat.ed far enough upstream to serve as much of the
valley as possible.

~~~~~~~~~
'.-~ . ,
.' ."
. ..' ....
'.' "
..' :/
The Strawn Reservoir Site
From the standpoint of physical features of the basin, the logical
location for one reservoir on the Neosho river is obviously at some
point immf'diately below the mouth of the CotLonwood river. On
the basis of limited information available at that time, and a pre-
liminary examination which was made of the area, it appeared that
a site was available just above Burlington, The attention of engi-
neers of the War Department was directed to this loeation. Pre-
liminary topographic surveys which they made indieate that ade-
quate eapaeity could not be developed there. Further exploration,
however, revealed a location nearer lola where a reservoir of the
needed capacity could be constructed. Although this site has many
favorable features, it is located far down in the valley, thus limit-
, ing the area which would be benefited by it. For this reason, the
location, was not regarded as being altogether satisfactory. Con-
sequently, upon undertakirlg the preparation of a comprehensive
plan for the Neosho basin, a further search was made for a reservoir
oite in the area between Burlington and Emporia. This reoulted in
the discovery of the site at Straw~.
The Strawn dam site is located along a line extending in a general
northeastward direction from a point near the middle of the south
side of section 29 to a point near the center of the NWl;t of section
22, all in T. 20 S., R. 14 E., Coffey county. The distance across the
vaHey at this location is approximately two miles. A dam capable
of st.oring water to a depth of about 40 feet at the dam would create
a reservoir of adequate capacity, A map of the reoervoir is shown
in Figure 3.
The department is engaged on studies to determine what extremes
of flood discharge may be expected to occur at this location. The
most severe flood conditions at the site would result, of course, from
heavy precipitation concentrated in the drainage basin above the
dam.
._".....
. ~, .
.
