<br />Given the proper temperature, flow and water quality, a system of <br />raceways and some ponds could be constructed to produce the 500,000 <br />fingel"lings needed for the CPo Fifteen raceways (ten 6'x60' and five <br />8'x80') would be the main production units. These units could <br />be used throughout the year. Ten 0.2-0.5 acre holding ponds would be <br />required to hold broodstock, in that, they may need seasonal temperature <br />change to produce eggs. Furthur, these ponds would be used to hold <br />production fish that have reached stocking size. A hatchery building <br />would be needed for egg incubation, starting fry and fry production. It <br />would need to have an egg incubation room, 16 circular tanks and a small <br />1 abora tory. <br /> <br />The hatchery described above should be able to produce fish of various <br />sizes at various times during the year. For example, Colorado squawfish <br />could be harvested at 2 inches in October, 5 inches in April and 6 <br />inches in June (Table 6). Further, 3-inch chubs could be stocked in <br />September or they could be held over winter in cool-water ponds to <br />retard or control their growth. Cool water is necessary, otherwise, <br />they would outgrow the available raceway space and soon would conflict <br />with squawfish production. <br /> <br />The approximate costs for both the pond and raceway type of hatchery <br />facilities are given in Tables 7, 8 and 9. Each hatchery would have an <br />estimated annual production of 500,000, 2-3 inch fish. Each would <br />probably be a four-man station: A Manager (GS-ll), Assistant Manager <br />(GS 7/9), Bio/tech (GS-5/7) and Clerk (GS-4/5). <br /> <br />Costs for site preparation, water control structures and piplines, <br />roads, pumping, electrical lines, and equipment have not been worked out <br />as yet, because they are dependent on site selection and engineering <br />estimates. <br /> <br />Site Selection <br /> <br />Site selection criteria were developed to evaluate and compare pros- <br />pective sites including water supply, land availability, existing facili- <br />ties, strategic location and costs, for both pond or raceway culture. <br /> <br />A. Water Needs <br /> <br />* <br />1. Water rights for [5-10 cfs] are required and should exist <br />or be for sale. <br />a. Must be dependable source in all seasons of the year. <br />b. must exceed all requirements and be sufficient to refill <br />ponds as needed [3 one acre ponds in 48 hrs. all ponds in <br />2 weeks]. . <br />c.
