1002505
I
I
i
I
:

o

Coordinate and attend a meeting with Don Miles, Extension Irrigation Engineer for
Colorado State University, to discuss the results of the above investigations and
select appropriate data for the Phase 2 analyses,

Summary

Table 1 presents a list of references evaluated regarding ditch losses and irrigation efficiencies,
Results have been tabulated into a comparative matrix for canal loss (Table 2), lateral loss (Table 3)
and system and farm irrigation efficiencies (Table 4), Data obtained from interviews conducted with
the major ditch companies, Bill Howland of the SEO and Don Miles, Extension Irrigation Engineer
for Colorado State University at Rocky Ford, Colorado are included in these ,tables, Based on
these reviews and interviews the following conclusions and observations regarding ditch losses
were made:

o Ditch losses depend on many factors including ditch length, depth of flow, channel
geometry, groundwater conditions, antecedent ditch conditions, temperature, and
sediment concentration of the flow, As presented in Figure 1 the combination of
these factors appears to be incorporated in data obtained from interviews with the
ditch companies, For exampie:

The general trend of Figure 1 demonstrates increased losses with length.

Ditches which are furthest from the river such as Lamar, Fort Bent, Las
Animas Consolidated and Fort Lyon would be expected to receive little
subsurface inflow to compensate for canal seepage and report more loss per
mile than canals which have a ditch located upgradient such as the Callin
and Buffalo,

The Bessemer, which diverted relatively clear water after Pueblo Reservoir
was constructed, reported more losses than any other ditch, This high loss
has reportedly since been reduced by lining sections of the canal.

2

-
