033281

An Invitation

The Southern San Juan Mountains Unit is a vast and spectacular area. Portions of three
National Forests. comprising the bulk of the Unit, are administered for the public by the
Forest Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture. How these lands will be managed in the
future is the objective of this planning effort, and the Forest Service needs your help to
develop meaningful management alternatives.

We sincerely desire that Forest Service land use planning and decision making processes
benefit from full public participation. We are committed to work with individuals,
organizations. and other agencies to accurately assess the social, environmental, and
economic facts and values relating to the Southern San Juan Mountains Unit. We also hope
to involve the public constructively in providing information, comments, and points of view
that will strengthen decisions and lead to better land and resource management on the
National Forests.

The enclosed fact sheets will aid your understanding of the many resource and management
oonsiderations within this unit. More than that, we hope you will attend the scheduled
workshops and other public meetings. Ask questions, but above all, let us hear from you.
Your opinions and viewpoints are important.

I

Gifford Pinchot, first Chief of the U. S. Forest Service, once said, "National Forests exist
today because the people want them. To make them accomplish the most good, the people
themselves must make clear how they want them run. . on We believe this is as true today as
it was nearly 70 years ago when this statement was made.

We want you to be invotved and help us plan for the future of the Southern San Juan
Mountains Unit. If you need additional information, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

H.
