<br />000295 <br /> <br />Many of the lakes and reservoirs receive low to moderate fishing and camping use. <br />Backcountry use is considered low, with the greatest amount occurring during the fall <br />hunting season. No sanitary facilities or primitive camp sites have been developed for the <br />backcountry recreationists; however. a need exists, particularly at lakes. Numerous suitable <br />sites are available for these facilities. <br /> <br />Excessive demands for camping along the Conejos River necessitated restricting camping in <br />the lower two-thirds of the main canyon to developed sites only. This maintains the <br />attractiveness of the area and prevents damage to vegetation. soil erosion, and water <br />pollution. <br /> <br />The Forest Service has inventoried 146 additional potential recreation sites. These include <br />four possible ski areas: Treasure Falls, Neff Mountain, Mammoth Mountain, and East Fork. <br />Over the last four years the East Fork site near Pagosa Springs has been subjected to <br />additional study and evaluation of weather, environmental and other skiing related subjects. <br /> <br />Various foot and horse trails, including the Continental Divide trail, lace the Unit and <br />numerous four-wheel and all purpose roads provide pleasure driving opportunities. <br />
