<br />onn~H <br /> <br />Recreation <br /> <br />The Southern San Juan Mountains are widely recognized for scenic beauty. The area offers <br />recreation opportunities ranging from back-country wilderness trips to camping in <br />developed campgrounds. Good to excellent hunting and fishing can be found throughout <br />most of the unit. <br /> <br />The most popular recreational acitvity during 1974 was camping, followed by hunting, auto <br />pleasure-driving, and fishing. Recreation use estimates for 1974 total 373,675 visitor-days. <br />(A visitor day is equivalent to one person using an area for one day or one night. For <br />example, a family of four spending one night and one day camping would account for eight <br />visitor days of camping use.) Four <br />privately owned campgrounds are within or adjacent to the Unit, and provide 172 developed <br />trailer camping sites. Nine lodges with cabin units supply a total capacity of just over 500 <br />people. In addition. over 240 private homes, used primarily for recreation, are within the <br />unit. Most of these residences are located in the Conejos Canyon area. <br />
